CHICAGO – Supporting mothers across Illinois, State Senator Lakesia Collins is excited to announce $450,000 coming to the 5th District as part of the Birth Equity Grant Initiative.

“As a proud sponsor of the Birth Equity legislation last year, I am excited to partner with the governor to bring investments to our communities,” said Collins (D-Chicago). “This will directly impact disparities Black women face during and after pregnancy by opening up resources and medical opportunities for so many women across Illinois and here in my district.”

The grants, ranging from $100,000 to $700,000, were awarded through a competitive process and are designed to support innovative, community-based efforts that have the potential to reduce inequities in populations historically at higher risk for adverse birth outcomes.

Two organizations in the 5th District have been awarded a combined $450,000:

  • McDermott Center (Haymarket Market) - $250,000
  • UIC Miles Square - $200,000

“Across the state in every community, women face unexpected complications during pregnancy, and as a sponsor of our birth equity initiative, I am proud to support funding to these organizations,” said Collins. “There are areas within Illinois that lack coverage for birth care providers, including within my district, and with this funding we can create more opportunities for residents to seek care.”
