CHICAGO – Over 500 people joined State Senator Lakesia Collins over the weekend at her fifth annual Mother’s Day Block Party, celebrating mothers across the 5th Senate District through joy, healing and the power of care.
“This was a beautiful opportunity to give back to our community and spoil the mothers who take care of us day to day,” said Collins (D-Chicago). “As a mother, I am proud to support all of us working to take care of our families. Thank you to all who came out to support our working mothers and to show them how important they are to our lives.”
Collins’ Mother’s Day Block Party brought over 70 community-based organizations to Chicago’s West Side, giving away free groceries, health screenings, wellness services and resource support and creating a space for every caregiver to feel seen and celebrated.
The event catered a beautiful and dedicated “She Shed” filled with manicures, massages, facials, healing circles, plants, tote making, and more. Kids were able to enjoy pony rides, a petting zoo, games, bouncy houses, face painting, cotton candy, a DJ, and live performances by Zion Ali and Miss Teen Chicago, Alyssia Duda. The event also included a live youth-led podcast interviewing community guests.
“As a former youth in care, a working mom of three, and chair of the Child Welfare Committee, this event is deeply personal to me,” said Collins. “Watching it grow each year is a reminder of what’s possible when joy and community care are centered and open to all. Thank you to the organizations, volunteers, businesses, community leaders and staff members who made this day possible and brought our communities voices front and center.”
Collins is grateful to UCAN CEO Christa Hamilton and Andrea Lee, Dewayne Morehead, and their entire team for hosting this year’s event.
